A virtual power plant coordinates batteries through a contract. Compare who controls charging, your backup reserve, electricity prices, fees and exit terms before treating a sign-up payment as a saving.
Put control on the comparison sheet.
Ask when the operator can charge or discharge the battery, what reserve remains for you and whether you can override dispatch. Check what happens to your backup reserve during high-demand events.
Look past the sign-up incentive.
Compare import prices, export credits, service fees, exit costs and the basis of any earnings estimate. Different households can get different results from the same product.
Check compatibility and your exit.
Find out which battery models and retailers are supported, whether an internet connection is required and what happens if you change retailer or leave the program. Review warranty throughput and cycling terms.
Separate federal and state requirements.
VPP capability and joining a VPP are different. The federal battery scheme does not itself require participation; some state support, including the WA battery rebate, does.
